TDB Fitness Newsletter 2/27/2022
When you think of exercise, what comes to mind? There are many ways you can satisfy your body’s need for physical activity. If stereotypical “fitness” isn’t always doing it for you – don’t be afraid to think outside the box! See this week’s trainer’s tips for ideas to get you started.
Exercise is more than “working out”
It’s almost like just finding out we are personal fitness trainers is enough to make people we meet feel guilty about their own lack of motivation for fitness. We hear a lot of “Yeah, I’ve gotta get back to the gym,” and “I’ve been meaning to start working out again.”
We seem to have this cultural notion that you’re doing something “wrong” if you’re not working out. The purpose of this week’s newsletter is to challenge this idea. What needs for physical fitness does your body actually have?
Yes, every human body needs physical activity to remain its healthiest. However, working out is only one way to get the physical activity you need. If your life story contains a series of failed fitness journeys, maybe you just don’t like fitness. And that’s ok!
On the other hand, if you’re currently living a lifestyle containing little to no physical activity, maybe jumping right into a fitness routine is too much! It’s easier to build healthy habits when you start your goals small, and progress one step at a time. Your first step could look like incorporating non-fitness, low impact, physical activity into your daily life. Once that habit becomes easy to maintain, you can increase the amount, and types, of physical activity you do. Here’s a few examples of simple ways to incorporate physical activity into your life before jumping into fitness:
- Stretch often. Give yourself five minutes to stretch after you wake up, and five minutes to stretch before bed. Even ten more minutes of stretching per day can provide your body with physical activity it needs.
- Walk more. For those who are able, walking is a simple way to incorporate more physical activity into your life. Park farther away from store entrances, take a walk during your lunch break, take the stairs, etc. I can almost guarantee you can identify places in your life where you could implement more walking.
- Pick up a sport. Cities everywhere have social leagues centered around physical activity. You can join adult leagues for pretty much any sport you could think of, at any level of competitive you could want. Kickball, bowling, softball, running, etc; all of these are opportunities for incorporating physical activity into your life while socializing at the same time.
If you’re not working out, its ok! If you’re not ready to dedicate your time and body to a fitness plan, its not going to stick. Oftentimes, setting fitness goals looks like starting much smaller, building in increasing amounts of physical activity as you go. So you can drop the guilt! Negative self talk doesn’t serve you. It actually makes it less likely you’ll succeed. All bodies need physical activity, however you know your body best. Don’t be afraid to make the choices that will work for you!
