When Self Discipline Becomes Punishment: Are you being too hard on yourself?

TDB Fitness Newsletter 11/14/2021

Healthy habit building and living a fit lifestyle takes dedication, it takes discipline. But do you ever take it too far? It’s easy to be hard on yourself when you feel like you’ve failed. See the trainer’s tips this week for how to recognize when you’re being too hard on yourself.

Tip of the week:

‘If you’re not first, you’re last”

I can be hard on myself. When I set goals, I really want to meet them. It’s been like this as long as I can remember; anything short of perfect feels like a failure.

This attitude, unfortunately, has been reinforced through positive feedback my entire life. We live in a society that widely judges us based on our productivity and output. When you’re a perfectionist, you’re typically highly productive and put out amazing work. At least, I did. So, what’s the problem?

Nobody is actually perfect. The human condition is one of making mistakes. Actually, mistakes, missteps, miscommunications, and misunderstandings are exactly how the human brain grows and learns. When we get caught up relying on our self-discipline to make us perfect, we enter a cycle that often leads to being impossibly unfair to ourselves when we fall short of meeting our goals.

The point of this week’s newsletter is to encourage you to take a look at the standards you hold for yourself, and compare them to the standards you hold for others in your life. We tend to extend grace, patience, and compassion to others that we refuse to extend to ourselves. I argue, that if you can be understanding with your loved ones when they fall short, why can’t you be that understanding with yourself?

See the chart below for the differences between self-discipline and self-punishment. Does anything sound familiar? Are you ever a little too self-critical?

Got Tea?

Renea’s a really good person to talk to — it’s part of what made her an effective middle school teacher. She’s good at listening, asking pointed questions, and giving gentle feedback.

Have something you need to get off your chest? You now have the opportunity to Spill the Tea With Renea… We’re in the process of designing an official members only space of our website to facilitate processes like these. Until then, DM her on Facebook if you ever want to chat!

  1. I would use the lack of discipline of other’s as setting myself apart by exhibiting strong discipline; it is only interpreted as strength by the medium lazy¡ Never hard on myself, jus perceive effort as a positive. All efforts profitable in some way.
