It is natural for your energy to change with the seasons. Staying self aware this winter will help you adapt your fitness and mental health goals along with it!

Listen to your Body

It’s officially October. Have you noticed how everything just kind of slows down this time of year? The days get noticeably shorter, animals prepare to hibernate, and the heat of the summer gives way to Pure Michigan Sweater weather, hot drinks, and cozy nights in.

As the seasons turn over, and the earth prepares for winter, a certain amount of slowing down is natural. As humans living in our society, however, we often force ourselves to keep up the same amount of obligations and activity, regardless. This is your sign that it is ok to slow down.

Listen to your body first. If your energy is changing and you want to do less – set those boundaries with your friends and family. If your body is begging for more sleep, cut down on your number of weekly workouts. Cutting down on the action does not have to be long term. If you feel good later, you can always get an extra workout in. The point is, if your workout routine and social calendar becomes a burden or starts to impact your mental health, change it!

S.A.D. – Seasonal affective disorder

A certain amount of slowing down this time of year is natural. However, know yourself well enough to know the difference between slowing down and seasonal affective disorder. S.A.D., also known as seasonal depression, is a type of depression many people get during the winter months. Even if you don’t have depression, you can still have seasonal affective disorder. Symptoms of S.A.D are similar to regular depression and can include apathy, lethargy, sleep problems including oversleeping, appetite changes/weight gain, and feelings of hopelessness.

So, how do you tell the difference between natural energy changes and seasonal affective disorder? Self awareness! We cannot stress enough how important it is to listen to your body and reflect on your thoughts. Metacognition refers to the practice of thinking about the way you think. When you think about your own thoughts you can identify patterns and question your own conclusions. It’s weird to consider, but our brains aren’t always truthful with us. When you make a practice out of thinking about your own thoughts you give yourself more control over your thoughts, your mood, your health, your whole life! Self awareness allows you to make choices based on what is best for you, rather than what you think you should do.

Overall, the message of this week’s newsletter is to listen to yourself and your body first. We allow outside pressures from society, our families, our peers, etc to make a lot of decisions for us. When we lose touch with our physical and emotional needs, our physical and emotional health suffers. Stay healthy this winter and spend time getting to know yourself.
