Fast food, and other takeout, is attractive because it arrives quickly and requires no prep or cleanup. However, when it comes to the food we consume, quicker and easier usually also means full of sodium, preservatives, and sugar, while lacking nutrition.
The time and effort it takes to prepare fresh meals can be major roadblocks to maintaining a healthy diet. Rethinking your approach to preparing meals and stocking your fridge can help you simplify your eating habits without sacrificing nutrition. Follow these tips for simplifying your time in the kitchen:
- Cut down on prep and cleanup as much as possible. How many dishes do you use to prepare, serve, and store your food? Do you really need to use every kitchen gadget? Are perfectly round hamburgers really worth the extra effort? When it comes to preparing meals for our families, we tend to overthink it. Maybe we have an image in our heads of what family dinner is “supposed” to look like. This can result in extra pressure that makes cooking a wholly unattractive feat. Rethink the standards you’re holding yourself to for your meals. No one needs you to be a gourmet chef in order to have a healthy diet. If you hate doing dishes, use fewer. If you don’t like chopping, buy pre-chopped. Know yourself, and know what you’re actually going to be willing to do to feed your family.
- Meal prep. We’ve talked about this before in our newsletter. Prepare your meals ahead of time to set yourself up for success for the week.
- Keep fresh fruits and vegetables around for snacks. We’re not perfect. Sometimes making enough portions so every individual meal has the optimal nutritional balance just ain’t gonna happen. But that’s ok! Every meal doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced in order to have a healthy diet. Instead, think of your diet as a whole. Are you eating a range of food items leading to balanced nutrition throughout the day? What are you and your family eating for snacks between meals that could supplement the portions you weren’t able to squeeze into mealtime?
- Know yourself and your family. It feels like every season the blog world latches on to a new “super food” that you HAVE TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DIET RIGHT NOW. However, making a trendy meal won’t be worth the effort if no one wants to eat it. Instead, keep it simple. Know what your family likes. Prepare yourself with a few healthy “fail-safe” meals you know your family will enjoy. This will result in energy much better spent than trying to keep up with the trends!
Here’s a simple recipe Vinnie makes me all the time when I’m feeling snacky. I love it because it’s salty, crunch, and satisfying. And the best part? It’s totally healthy AND easy to make.
- One large cucumber
- 1/2 pint fresh cherry tomatoes
- one half medium white onion
- 1/4 c water
- 1/3 c white vinegar
- 1 tbsp white sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- pepper to taste
Chop to preferences and combine fresh veggies in a bowl. Dress and toss with water, white vinegar, and spices. Enjoy cold!
